Ice Climbing

During most of the year the Sierra is blessed with excellent ice climbing possibilities. We offer training in ice climbing techniques for beginning through advanced levels. Skills taught include front point and flat foot cramponing, tool placement, reading ice conditions, placing ice screws, multiple anchors in ice, techniques for leading, and more. Scheduled dates are listed below, or contact our office for custom dates.


Rock and Ice Weekends

No Snow? No worries! SMI is now offering Rock and Ice Climbing weekend courses this year. The weather has never been better for both of these activities. No experience necessary, this course will be geared towards the beginner to experienced rock and ice climbers.

$220/one day $320 for both

Winter Ice Climbing Course

We visit the frozen waterfalls in June Lake and Lee Vining Canyon, when the winter weather freezes local waterfalls into ice.

Cost:

1-day: $220 per person based on a minimum of two people
2-days: $320 per person based on a minimum of two people

Summer/Fall Ice Climbing Course

The summer and fall months yield constant melt freeze cycles that turn snow couloirs into hardened alpine ice. We will camp overnight at an entry level ice climb and practice skills in the afternoon. Day two will be our climb and descent back to the parking lot.

$280 based on a minimum of two people

A Day of Ice Climbing

We offer this for anyone who has completed an ice climbing course and wants to bring their skills to a new level. We will assess your skills and match a climb to fit you.
